Ebook About
When dealing with emotional baggage, it's best to pack light. An amusing and life-affirming travel memoir, concluding with tips for managing depressive episodes.Keith Foskett refused to let his dark mood define his limitations. Unknowingly suffering with depression, he took to hiking the wilds of Scotland to face his inner demons. From the craggy Highlands of the Cape Wrath Trail and West Highland Way, to the canals criss-crossing the low country, 600 miles of unforgiving hiking terrain called his name.Keith repositioned his compass to what really matters in life. As laughter became his travelling companion, he discovered that when dealing with emotional baggage, it's best to pack light. Pushing his mind and body past breaking point, his journey could set a brave new course for coping with depression.Battling ferocious weather, the ubiquitous Scottish midge, strange-sounding local delicacies and substandard TV sets, this is one man's battle to conquer the wilds of Scotland, and his own psychological demons.Editorial reviews:'Despite the challenges of the terrain and the weather, the author's affinity with the Highlands is obvious and his descriptions of the landscape are captivating. We are introduced to beautiful glens, rivers and lochs that many of us will never have heard of. We are reminded by an experienced international long-distance hiker to not forget the quality of what we have at home in the UK.It's hard not to admire Keith Foskett for what he achieves in this book. But he does not take himself too seriously either, and handles the weight of the subject matter with humility and laughter. This is a bold and important book which I genuinely hope will appeal to a wide audience.'- James Roddie (The Great Outdoors Magazine)'As well as the details of his walk, Keith captures the feeling of being on a long hike well - both the joys and the tribulations. His sense of humour comes through too, and he's not afraid of laughing at himself. This makes for an entertaining book that also has a serious undertone. It's a welcome addition to the literature of long-distance walking.'- Chris Townsend (Long-distance hiker and TGO magazine columnist). What Amazon readers are saying:★★★★★ It is possible to deal with depression, and while this book may not "cure" you, it will tell you what one person did to fight it - and this story can help a lot of people.★★★★★ This author is a fantastic writer. Book High and Low: Hiking Away From Depression (Thru-Hiking Adventures Book 4) Review :

The writer, who goes by "Fozzie" on the trail, has written a lot more than just a trail journal. Struggling with depression but unable to see it or admit to it, he alternately slogs miserably through the rain, and/or revels in the beauty of a hike across Scotland, all the while feeling confused about what is going on between his ears.Eventually coming to an understanding, he writes in detail about coming to terms with depression, and how he was able to combat it.What interested to me personally were the numbered steps he details at the end of the book: his recommendations. Many of the things he recommends are what I have been doing for years to try to stave off my two family curses: Alzheimer's disease and strokes. However, it also came home to me that there's a third family curse: depression. Perhaps the reason I have suffered only mildly from depression over the years is because of my longtime commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Taking Fozzie's words to heart, I plan to fine-tune my current habits with some of his suggestions. I don't feel I am completely immune to depression myself, and can use the additional information. Thanks for another good adventure, Fozzie!
I began reading this about the same time I hiked the river to river trail in southern Illinois. I also suffer from mild depression. In Fozzie’s previous books I found inspiration to go on my first solo hike, during the hike reading this much more personal book which offers a window into his emotions helped me take a better look at my own emotions. One of the hurdles I faced during my short adventure, just shy of my halfway point of the entire 160 miles I was determined to crush, was my phone failed halfway through, losing my main source of navigation, connection to my wife and daughters, my beloved music, and finally my kindle app providing this book made my morale really low. I faced more physical obstacles on the trail but much worse was churning in my mind. Depression, missing family, failing to quit smoking during hike, stress of trail conditions being poor, spraining an ankle traversing countless equestrian cesspool mud pits, weather, and finally the western terminus just 10 miles away. The remaining path ahead is currently plagued with several sections of the road walk closed due to the Mississippi flooding, which sent me home feeling like a failure despite wading and swimming a half mile of stagnant snake infested water. Once home I felt like I gave up to easy. After a nights rest I was disappointed I didn’t swim those final 10 miles with the 15 lbs in my pack. Feeling low I returned to this book and have now finished it realizing a lot more of the positive aspects of not only my journey but also my life at home and work. Anyone who reads about Keiths journeys can not only find motivation to go on their own, but can also find how process their journey whether it be on any trail, but also their adventure in life.
